It would be his first day back in regular apprentice duties and like any good apprentice, he had outran his mentor and after returning with a nice amount of prey, he was given until sunset to return to camp. Have fun. With a grin he had took off with a new source of energy and arrived at the place he had hurt himself. With excitement and just a tad bit of anger, he climbed to the branch he had been on, and with a deep breath descended the tree with a bit more ease. Of course, it was not to prove that he could do it, but to settle a part of his brain that said his reaction had been because he had hurt a good friend. With a small snort, the tom padded off, paws aching slightly from the impact of the ground.
Now with the pride still in him, his whiskers twitching with mischief the tom padded to wards his new location of fun. His ears perked with excitement as his paws brushed against the dirt under paw and soon the lake stretched out before him. Silent stretched further as his eyes widen in delight. How he had never known of such a beautiful place before now was a bewilder thought and with eyes as round as moons he padded forward closer to the lake. His eyes transferred to the snakes bathing not to far off and with a wicked grin he pondered of their use. 'The leader's den could use some snakes for company.'

Coalpaw had been napping in the pine tree since before Rookfang had died. It was a spot that comforted him, high above the ground so full of hypocrites and temptations. There was nothing for him on the ground but pain.
Even with Leopardpaw, Coalpaw was never truly satisfied. The shadowy tom was fond of the spotted feline, too close to her to be comfortable. With treasuring someone came the danger of losing them. The agony felt when they died or suddenly just disappeared from your side. All this had been proven by Rookfang's death.
He was a fool to have held his uncle and mentor in such high regard. In the life of a warrior, the next moment, let alone day was never promised. It was a blatant fact that one day his best friend would leave him to go solo. To gain a new mentor who could never compare to the intelligent, passionate tom. Rookfang was never coming back to wake Coalpaw with his infectious laughter. This was something he didn't want to feel again. It was a pain that scared him even more than death. Dying was actually low on his list of fears. Coalpaw yearned for the peace of it, but of course StarClan liked to tease him. They dangled it right over his nose, but never granted it to him. No, the apprentice wasn't that lucky. He was a soul born to suffer, and he didn't want to share any of that suffering with anyone; not even his bastard father.
Ears twitching, frosty green eyes snapped open at the sound of a cat scaling his tree. Letting his paws and tail dangle still, the shadow of a tom knew he wasn't seen, made invisible by the shadows of the lush tree. At the thud of paws, the figure whom had invaded his very favorite hiding place was revealed.
Briarpaw. That idiot was loud, flirtatious, and a real pain. He always played pranks with snakes and such, putting them in nests to scare his Clanmates. The goof of an apprentice really grated Coalpaw's nerves. He took nothing soberly, always romping around like a drunkard.
It's time I show him how to shut the hell up.
Prowling to the edge of his limb, Coalpaw swung down swiftly with a silent landing at the bottom of the old pine. His lithe body slunk purposefully after the smokey black cat. It was time to rid the Clan of another annoyance. If his snarky words didn't work, maybe violence would, and he had no qualms with injuring fellow ShadowClanners.
When he saw Briarpaw eye nearby snakes on the shore, a sigh breezed out of his maw. Frigid gaze narrowed, he came to a stop next to his Clanmate, tail twitching in annoyance.
"You wake me, then fill your head with nonsense that will further frustrate me...you are more bee-brained than I thought. A childish fool, unfit for the art of warrior training."
